World Health Organization (WHO) Announces New Collaborating Centre on AI for Health Governance

The World Health Organization (WHO) has designated the Digital Ethics Centre at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands as a WHO Collaborating Centre on Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Health Governance. This new centre will play a key role in WHO’s efforts to promote the ethical and responsible use of AI in healthcare by advancing research on key topics and offering expert advice for policy development.

AI in Healthcare:

  • Predictive Modelling: Analyzing patient medical histories and genetic data to predict the likelihood of certain diseases or the progression of existing conditions.
  • Research and Development: Accelerating drug and vaccine discovery, as well as planning and conducting targeted clinical trials.
  • Disease Diagnosis and Monitoring: Enhancing patient screening, improving medical image recognition, and enabling precision medicine.
  • Care Economy: Supporting aging populations through virtual assistant chatbots, pattern recognition, and advancements in preventive healthcare.

Challenges to AI in Healthcare:

  • Data Security and Privacy Issues: AI in healthcare generates and stores large amounts of sensitive personal and medical data, raising concerns about data security.
  • Algorithmic Bias: There is a risk that AI could perpetuate existing biases, exacerbating disparities for certain individuals or groups.
  • Fragmented Regulatory Framework: The lack of clear regulation and growing public distrust in AI raises concerns about accountability and responsibility.
