Bioenergy Potential

Unlocking India’s Bioenergy Potential

India’s bioenergy potential was prominently featured during India Energy Week 2025.

What is Bioenergy?

Bioenergy is derived from organic materials, commonly known as biomass, which includes substances like plants, wood, dung, or charcoal.

Key Categories of Bioenergy:

  • Traditional Bioenergy: Involves the combustion of biomass materials such as wood and animal waste.
  • Modern Bioenergy: Includes liquid biofuels, biogas, and other advanced energy sources.

India’s Bioenergy Status:

  • Energy Mix Contribution: Modern bioenergy currently contributes 13% to India’s total energy consumption, with a projected 45% growth from 2023 to 2030.
  • India is expected to account for over a third of the global bioenergy demand growth.
  • Key Driving Factor: India’s annual biomass production is around 750 million metric tons (MMT).

Key Targets for Bioenergy Use:

  • 20% ethanol blending by 2025/26 and 5% biodiesel blending by 2030.
  • 5% Compressed Bio-Gas (CBG) blending requirement by 2028/29.

Challenges:

  • Inadequate feedstock supply, affecting fuel reliability and quality.
  • Lack of publicly available data on biomass availability across different regions.
  • Limited storage infrastructure.

Measures Needed:

  • Develop a centralized, comprehensive feedstock assessment system.
  • Establish a central registry to track CBG production.
  • Implement technical standards for biogas and biomethane facilities.
