The Department of Biotechnology has launched GARBH-INi-DRISHTI at the Translational Health Science and Technology Institute (THSTI) in Faridabad, Haryana.

What is GARBH-Ini-DRISHTI?
GARBH-INi-DRISHTI is a data dashboard that offers a comprehensive view of one of South Asia’s largest maternal and child health databases.

Significance:
The platform provides access to clinical data, images, and biospecimens collected from over 12,000 pregnant women, newborns, and postpartum mothers. It was developed under the GARBH-INi program, which is a flagship initiative supported by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT).

Aim:
The primary goal of GARBH-INi-DRISHTI is to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Extra-Long Staple Cotton

The Union Budget 2025 has introduced the ‘Mission for Cotton Productivity,’ a five-year initiative aimed at enhancing cotton farming productivity, sustainability, and promoting extra-long staple (ELS) cotton varieties.

Extra-Long Staple (ELS) Cotton
ELS cotton is a premium variety characterized by a fiber length of 34.925 mm or more.

• Cultivation: ELS cotton is grown in approximately 10% of the cotton cultivation area and contributes 4% to global cotton production.
• Major Producers: The leading producers of ELS cotton include the USA, Egypt, Sudan, India, Peru, Israel, and China.
• Key ELS Varieties: Pima (USA), Peru (Israel), Giza (Egypt), Suvin & DCH32 (India), and Barakat (Sudan).
• Major ELS Producing States in India: Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh.
