About NIMHANS:

• Established: 1972 in Bengaluru
• Mission: NIMHANS follows a tripartite mission to deliver exceptional patient care, conduct groundbreaking research, and provide advanced training.
• Status:
  • Declared a Deemed University in 1994.
  • Conferred the status of ‘Institute of National Importance’ in 2012 through a separate act of Parliament.
• Notable Role: NIMHANS is the designated nodal center for the Tele MANAS program, a nationwide initiative providing mental health services.

A toll-free helpline (14416) available across India, offering a range of mental health services.

NAMASTE Scheme

The Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment recently distributed PPE kits and Ayushman Cards to sewer and septic tank workers under the NAMASTE Scheme.

About NAMASTE Scheme (National Action for Mechanized Sanitation Ecosystem):

• Objective: The scheme aims to formalize sanitation workers, promote mechanized cleaning, and ensure their safety.
• Implementing Ministries: The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE) and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
• Implementing Agency: The National Safai Karmacharis Finance Development Corporation (NSKFDC) under MoSJE.
• Duration: From FY 2023-24 to 2025-26 (3 years).
• Target Group: Sewer and septic tank workers (SSWs) and waste pickers (added in 2024).
