The Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has been extended until 2028 with an increased budget allocation in the Union Budget for 2025-26. Launched in 2019, the mission aimed to provide functional household tap connections (FHTC) to ensure 55 liters of drinking water per capita per day for all rural households in the country by 2024. JJM emphasizes village-level planning and community participation in all water supply decisions. Additionally, the mission mandates that at least 50% of the members of the Village Water & Sanitation Committee (Pani Samiti) must be women.

Funding pattern between Centre and State:
- 90:10 for Himalayan States (Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh) and North-Eastern States.
- 100% for Union Territories.
- 50:50 for other States.
Key Achievements under JJM
Since its launch in 2019, over 12 crore families have gained access to piped drinking water, up from 3.23 crore (according to the Economic Survey 2024-25).
States with 100% coverage: Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Telangana, and Mizoram.
Union Territories with 100% coverage: Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Dadra Nagar Haveli & Daman Diu, and Puducherry.
