Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways inaugurated the Inland Waterways Terminal at Jogighopa, Assam

Situated close to Bhutan and Bangladesh, the terminal is of strategic importance, vital for India's bilateral trade, and supports the Neighbourhood First Policy.

About Inland Water Transport
Definition: It involves the transportation of people and goods on navigable waterways such as rivers, canals, lakes, and other inland water bodies.

Legislative Frameworks

  • Inland Waterways Authority of India Act, 1985: This Act established the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) in 1986.
IWAI is an autonomous body responsible for the development, maintenance, and regulation of National Waterways (NWs).
  • National Waterways Act, 2016: This legislation declared 111 inland waterways as ‘National Waterways’ (NWs).
Examples include NW-1 (Haldia–Allahabad on the Ganga-Bhagirathi-Hooghly River System) and NW-2 (Dhubri–Sadiya on the Brahmaputra River).
  • Inland Vessels Act, 2021: Replacing the century-old Inland Vessels Act of 1917, this law aims to streamline the regulation of inland vessels and ensure their safe navigation.

Importance of Inland Water Transport

  • Supports the Logistics Sector: Cargo traffic on National Waterways has seen tremendous growth over the past decade.
  • Promotes Tourism: Initiatives like the Cruise Bharat Mission aim to significantly increase sea and river cruise tourism by 2029.
