IUCN Green List
Four new sites have been added to the IUCN Green List, including:
- Sharaan Nature Reserve and King Abdulaziz Royal Nature Reserve in Saudi Arabia
- Aqaba Marine Reserve in Jordan
- Sir Bu Nair Protected Area in the UAE
About the IUCN Green List
The IUCN Green List is a global certification program aimed at recognizing and promoting protected and conserved areas that are effective, equitable, and successful in conservation.
The program focuses on highlighting best practices and setting benchmarks for progress in conservation management, with the goal of increasing the number of protected areas that are both effectively and equitably managed. This contributes to SDG 15 ("Life on Land") and helps meet Aichi Target 11 under the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).
Caracal
The first photographic record of the Caracal has recently been shared from Mukundra Hills Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan.
About the Caracal
- Native Range: Found across various regions of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia, and South Asia, including India.
- Characteristics: The Caracal is a primarily nocturnal wildcat known for its distinctive pointed ears, which are the origin of its name. The name "Caracal" comes from the Turkish word karakulak, meaning "black ears."
- Conservation Status:
- IUCN: Least Concern
- Wildlife Protection Act (WPA), 1972: Schedule I
- CITES: Appendix I (for the Asian population)
The Caracal is part of the Species Recovery Programme, which focuses on the conservation of endangered species.
