Giant Goliath Beetle

Recent research has revealed that the West African cocoa industry and the international trade in dried insects have led to the extinction of one species of Goliath beetle.

About Goliath Beetles

• Features:

  • Among the largest insects in the world, growing up to 110mm in length.
  • There are five species, with males possessing Y-shaped horns, while females do not.
  • They are capable of flight and are nocturnal, being most active at night.
  • Adults primarily feed on tree sap found in mature rainforests.

• Habitat: These beetles are mainly found in the tropical rainforests of Africa.

• Significance: Goliath beetles are important decomposers, scavenging both meat and plant debris, which helps recycle nutrients. Their presence is often a sign of healthy forest ecosystems.

  For the first time, “e-Toycathon 2025” was organized by C-DAC under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as part of its research initiatives aimed at boosting the electronic toy sector.

  This event was announced as part of the MeitY-funded project, "Development of Electronics and IT-based Control and Automation Solutions for the Consumer Electronics - Toys Industry.”

  About India’s Toy Industry

• Status: The industry is expected to reach a value of US$ 3 billion by 2028.

• Initiatives Taken:

• The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) issued the Toys Quality Control Order in 2020, under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
• A National Action Plan for Toys was introduced to promote trade, improve design and quality, and support indigenous toy manufacturing.
• The Directorate General of Foreign Trade has mandated sample testing to curb the import of substandard toys.
