Indian Prime Minister (PM) Presents Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) Card to Mauritius Counterpart
Earlier in 2024, the OCI card was extended to the 7th generation of the Indian diaspora in Mauritius. This was part of the ongoing efforts to strengthen ties with the Indian community abroad.
About the OCI Card Scheme: The OCI card scheme was introduced in 2005 through an amendment to the Citizenship Act, 1955. In 2015, the scheme merged with the Person of Indian Origin (PIO) card, and all PIO cardholders were automatically granted OCI status.
Eligibility for the OCI Card:
- Individuals who were citizens of India at any time on or after 26th January 1950.
- Individuals who were eligible to become citizens of India on 26th January 1950, or who belonged to a territory that became part of India after 15th August 1947.
- Exceptions: Individuals whose parents or grandparents were citizens of Pakistan, Bangladesh, or other countries specified by the government are ineligible for the OCI card.
Benefits of the OCI Card:
- Lifelong multiple-entry, multi-purpose visa for visiting India.
- Exemption from reporting to police authorities, regardless of the length of stay.
- Parity with Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) in financial, economic, and educational fields, with the exception of acquiring agricultural or plantation properties in India.
