Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways Launches Initiatives to Modernize India’s Maritime Infrastructure
The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways has introduced several key initiatives aimed at modernizing India’s maritime infrastructure. These initiatives include:
One Nation-One Port Process (ONOP): This initiative aims to standardize and streamline operations across India’s major ports.
Sagar Ankalan: This initiative introduces the Logistics Port Performance Index (LPPI) for FY 2023-24, which evaluates major and non-major ports across Bulk (Dry & Liquid) and Container categories. Key performance indicators (KPIs) include cargo handling, turnaround time, berth idle time, container dwell time, and ship berth-day output. It aligns with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan and the National Logistics Policy, 2022.
Bharat Global Ports Consortium: This initiative seeks to streamline logistics, strengthen supply chains, and support the 'Make in India' initiative by enhancing port infrastructure. It aims to boost exports and bring together various stakeholders, such as India Ports Global Private Limited (IPGPL) and Sagarmala Development Company Limited (SDCL).
MAITRI Logo (Master Application for International Trade and Regulatory Interface): MAITRI will simplify trade processes, reduce bureaucratic hurdles, and expedite clearances, reinforcing India’s commitment to ease of doing business. It also plays a vital role in operationalizing the Virtual Trade Corridor (VTC) between India and the UAE. MAITRI is aligned with the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) and is expected to expand to BIMSTEC and ASEAN nations. The platform will leverage AI and Blockchain technology to enhance efficiency and security.
